Adam Wibby the research and development industrial designer on OtterBox’s new case started with a small idea…
“I got thinking about cars crashing… In the car is an occupant, it has a hard shell around it and that shell is designed to save that occupant while sacrificing itself.”
This is the crumple zone and the foundation of the new OtterBox case the “Reflex”. Adam created a prototype with air pockets that compress when dropped and bounce back protecting the device inside. OtterBox vigorously tested different prototypes to see how they would break and bend.
OtterBox decided to move it to the next step and “take it to plastic” meaning manufacturing models with actual plastic. FEA testing on this idea began which entails analyzing and measuring the force of drops on models with different materials and configurations etc.
The results prove that the reflex series case reduces the force on the case up to 3 times. The drop protection level is very high and can literally be bounced off a desk.
This is a revolution in mobile phone protection and a massive leap ahead of all competition for OtterBox.
We hope to see more great innovations from them. This series of cases is available from our website Reflex Series.
